MID-APRIL NEWS
It is hard to believe there is only eight weeks left in this school year. The children have grown so much this year! As always, I appreciate all the extra practice, support and communication from home. I truly believe the children do better in school when we work together.
We continue to do phonemic oral exercises daily. These exercises help the children practice recognizing rhyming words, blending and separating words. They also practice recognizing beginning, middle and ending sounds. The children are getting very good with all these skills.
We are now in our second printing book called Kick Start Kindergarten. In this book, we focus on the printing of all the lowercase letters. It is also a great opportunity to review the sounds of all the letters. During the last two weeks of April, we will be practicing the printing of e, l, k, y and j. During the third trimester, the children will be assessed on the recognition of the lowercase letters. This is something you can practice at home with your child.
We now practice writing our first names in title case. This means the children print a capital letter for the first letter of their name, and all of the rest of the letters are lowercase. Then in May we will practice writing our last names in title case. You may want to practice this at home with your child.
We often have story time in Pre-k4. Usually we discuss who are the main characters in the story. This is something you can also do at home with your child when you read stories. Perhaps you are already doing this.
In math during the third trimester, we are focusing on the counting and the recognition of numbers 0 - 20. Many children can count to 20, but we all are working on recognizing the numbers 0 - 20. Please review these with your child. We still are practicing adding on up to 10, and then taking away (subtraction) from numbers 10 and less. During calendar time, we continue to practice the days of the week, and what is today, yesterday and tomorrow. Lastly, we are learning to measure with standard and non-standard units of measurement.
Please remember to put your child's name inside all of the coats, hats, and etc. You would be surprised how many children do not recognize their own clothing. When your child wears boots to school, he/she needs shoes for the classroom. If your child does not have an extra pair of shoes in his/her clothes bin, please send an extra pair of shoes for the day.
If you have questions or concerns, please let me know. I may not be able to answer you during the day, but will get back to you before or after school.
Gratefully,
Mrs. Pancotto
